Vignettes on the 1878 Burton Crescent murder. (Lloyd’s News, 13 October 1907)

The Burton Crescent case has utterly broken down, and Mr Flowers, the Magistrate at Bow Street, has been compelled to discharge the accused, Mary Donovan. There was in fact not a scrap of evidence against her on which a jury would convict. The wedding ring clearly did not belong to the deceased, or was pawned by the accused. The boots were never found. The blood stains were quite problematic, and so Mr Poland, on the part of the prosecution, ‘threw up the sponge,’ and Mary Donovan stepped out of the dock a free woman.
